Learning to press pause
Picture it: It is a brisk, early morning. The sun is rising and the birds are chirping. Then, you hit the snooze button 2 or 3 times. You try to check your phone for the time and weather. But somehow, someway you are on instagram. You get ready, eat breakfast and you are launched into the rest of the day.
Now add navigating traffic, doing the laundry, paying bills, figuring what to cook this week, picking comfortable but stylish outfits and checking in with your friends and family. And the list could go on and on.🤯
Stress can accumulate. It can affect our energy, sleep, mood and body. We can’t wait for Sunday for self care. Learning to press pause in our day takes practice. And I am learning to do just that.
At first, all I could think of is the phrase “Practice makes perfect”. But practice is not perfect and neither is the finished product. I am NOT perfect and my self care practice won’t be either. But I can make attempts to put myself first and take care of my mind and body. If not, I won’t be ready for the people and things that really need my attention.
So how do we start putting ourselves first? Let’s start with the following:
1) Remind yourself that self care isn’t selfish. A well rested you is better prepared than an exhausted you.
2) Start placing positive affirmations on post-its in the places you most frequent. For example, place “You are beautiful” on your mirror. Why? To remind yourself everyday. You ARE beautiful.
3) Make an uplifting playlist to wake up and get ready to.
4) Set 15-30 minutes in a day for some peace and quiet. For me, tea time is my time. 🫖
5) Saying “no” If something is going to cause you to be overwhelmed. Don’t do it. Most people will understand because they have been there. When you feel comfortable and have the time, then say “yes”
6) Take a 20-30 minute walk 2 or more times during the week. It’s just you and the fresh air. Trust me. It feels great.
Please feel free to place in the comments the self care exercises that are helping you to set pause. ✏️
I hope you have a lovely week. 🤗 And remember to take your time and unwind.☕️
